Are You Too Obsessed With Your Superannuation Fund?
Wednesday January 7, 2009
If you've planned for retirement and you are easily going to reach your superannuation fund goals, you may want to consider other uses for your money. While having more for retirement is always good, saving more than you need to be comfortable at the expense of your present comfort just doesn't make sense.
Have you had a holiday away in the past few years? Have you even had a holiday? Many people near the end of their careers will save these luxuries for retirement so that they can save more money - yet if they took the break they needed now, they might find that they could work for several more years than they had previously planned. If you are dreaming of a retirement with more comforts than you have now, you may be disappointed. Old habits die hard, so if you go without unnecessarily while working, you are likely to do so in retirement as well.
Pay attention to your superannuation fund. Spend time choosing a superannuation fund that will charge the lowest fees for the level of service that you need. This may be an industry superannuation fund or similar types of superannuation funds if you require some help in managing your super. If you know how a superannuation fund works to make you money over time and are knowledgeable about investment, you may wish to consider using a self managed superannuation fund at some point. Now, whenever you find that you are easily accomplishing your retirement goals, think of where else your money could go to help you enjoy life now. If it means that you can keep your career going for an extra five years or more, it'll be an excellent investment in yourself.
