Find Superannuation

Tuesday January 27, 2009

You can find superannuation that you have left in an old superannuation fund, even years after you switched to another superannuation fund. A huge problem for superannuation fund organisations is that many people fail to transfer their money from one superannuation fund to another. This problem is less prevalent now that people may choose a different superannuation fund to the one that their employer has chosen. In the past, when changing jobs, many workers would have to change their superannuation fund. They might then make the assumption that their previous superannuation fund savings would be transferred to the new fund. If you think you may have done this, then it would be worthwhile to find superannuation savings that you may have left behind.

You may try to find superannuation you could have lost by simply using the SuperSearch tool on the Australian Taxation Office site. This will require your Tax File Number, family name, given name and your date of birth. Superannuation funds provide the ATO with details of inactive funds, which is what the SuperSearch is based upon. Once the search is completed, you may be able to find superannuation savings in the results that you had thought lost. Remember, these are meant to be possible matches, so you will need to contact the superannuation funds that you find if you want to look into reclaiming your savings.
