Can you choose the superannuation fund you belong to?
Tuesday June 10, 2008
Many people are unsure of whether they can change their superannuation fund. In Australia, your employer may have a preferred superannuation fund which they use, but you are not required to use the same one. Usually businesses are offered incentives to choose a particular superannuation fund as preferred, or sometimes it's easier to maintain a business relationship with a single fund. Regardless of the benefits to the company, you may choose your own superannuation fund, although you should be sure that it is advantageous to do so. Many people choose the superannuation fund that their parents have or their partner uses. While this may be the right superannuation fund for them, you may be able to benefit from an industry specific superannuation fund that will give you greater returns or charge you less.
